Grinding sound
I think I have a problem in the clutch on my '06 660. I'm hearing a grinding sound from what appears to be inside the clutch somewhere. It doesn't matter if it's in gear or in neutral......sound is still there. I do all of the maintainance on my Grizz, but I've never touched the clutch....it has always intimidated me. The clutch isn't slipping and the bike runs and drives fine. Any ideas ? Thanks......Rick

remove the floor board and the side cover and take a look, theres nothing to be intimidated about when taking the clutch cover off, going into the primary is not bad either, take lots pics if u need too, there is alot of help and pics and other threads on here. there is also grizzhopper.com
does it do it when u let off the throttle, idle, on the throttle, constant rpm,

One of my problems is, I don't know what I'm looking for or at. I'm completely clueless about the clutch on my machine. I consider myself fairly mechanically inclined, but I have never messed with a clutch before. As far as your question, yes....I can hear the the noise all the time. It's more prevalent at idle.....mainly because there is less engine noise.

someone else might have more ideas but id take the cover off and see if something u can see thats not right, but take pics and post them up.
if your carefull u can start it up with the side cover off [moving parts] rev it alittle to make the primary to work in neutral. but it might be in the wet clutch or a bearing.

Since you said your never have been in the clutch, Im betting the roller weights need to be cleaned. Here is a direct link to Grizzhopper. It will show you step by step how to do this. Shift Lockout OR
When you start the bike, does it jump forward any? If it does, then your one way bearing is going out.
With the information you have given, I bet the clutch just needs to be serviced. If you have any questions just ask. I serviced 3 clutches yesterday. ONce you do it you will kick yourself for not doing it before. Its so simply and takes less then 30 minutes when you know how to do it.

Nope.......the bike doesn't jump any at all on start up. Thanks for the link, lawdog.......I'll check that out...and I hope you're right and servicing is all it needs. Like I stated earlier, I really don't know how this CVT clutch works.......are the weights turning even in park, idleing ? A few more questions.....I've read a number of posts about going to a greaseless weight system......pro's ?.....con's ? where would I get this system from ?......Price ?

the good thing about the greaseless weights is the lack of service it needs. You will hear more rattling from the greaseless weights.
I personally dont know any cons to going greaseless. However, IM sure someone will have some.
You can find them on ebay, hunterworks, and several other places.

Rick, good to hear from you!
if you haven't been riding much you may have a critter nest in there! the clutch should NOT be spinning at idle, are you sure it's coming from the clutch side?

Hammer ! Howdy, stranger ! The Grizz has been getting worked pretty hard here lately.....working on the property I lease for hunting. So much so, that I've had the gas boiling issue ( which I've never had before) The noise definitely sounds like its coming from the clutch area to me.....but if nothing's moving at idle or in park, I wonder what it could be ? It's an '06 model and the clutch has never been touched so at the very least, it needs to be serviced and cleaned. I'll probably just bite the bullet and do the greaseless weights and a shim mod while i'm in there....I'm pretty nervous and anxious about tearing into the CVT, but I guess thats the only way to learn.....I figure, if I can't get everthing back together I can just take a bag of parts to a dealer and them put it back together......lol
