I like uni fast, and easy to clean with good filtration. Plus there not over priced like K&Ns. JMO

K&N, proven in desert racing for years and the gauze filtration system works much better than the foam. The proof is in the airbox.

Buying a foam filter for your Grizzly is like buying a Harbor Freight ratchet strap to secure your Grizzly to the trailer. If you have a great ATV, you want to keep it secure so you don't skimp on the ratchet strap. To protect the engine while getting max filtration and airflow you spend the extra dollars for the best. I dont want to get into an argument, but i have seen quite a few studies done, and they all come back showing paper/cotton gauze filters just dont filter as good as foam. K&N promises much freer breathing, more hp gains from the filter. Its a trade off, the freer breathing, the less filtration you will get. Foam filters wont give you the gains, but will give you the best protection. I would use K&Ns on road vehicles, but when it comes down to the silty dust, i just dont trust it. Heres a link to a guy that tested several different filters.

Gus just curious do you use any type of prefilter or outerwears with your K&N? Or are you using the EHS Lid? I know most guys using K&N for any type of racing or dusty trail conditions use prefilters but I know guys with uni's or twin airs that say they never need to run prefilters.

Air Filter Tip Sheet
No arguments from my end. Everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it. I consider it a nice relaxing discussion about air filters.

I have read numerous test reports also but the testing done where I live and ride by me and not someone that may have a possible agenda shows that K&N filtered better than UNI in the western desert of Utah.
I did not try any other filters. I will say that there is more sand than silt in the desert area that we tested in so that is something to consider also.

As I looked at the tests from Bob's site, I can tell right away that the test would be totally different considering where he lives and where I live. All of my filters come out orange/red and his were black. He was running on the road in a Miata in Washington, and I was running on the Utah desert with a Grizzly. 2 different sets of circumstances and 2 different results.

A quote from Bob's site - "A clear pattern already exists. Foam is foam no matter who makes it. Fiberous filters are still fiberous filters, and paper is still paper. Sure there are minor differences, but in this test a clear pattern emerged based on basic filtration media rather quickly. I personally do not like the difficulties associated with servicing foam filters."

No prefilter required with the K&N design for my riding. If I was going to be running 500 to 1,000 miles in the desert sand and silt, then I would run a prefilter. I change my oil and filter out every 250-500 miles depending on the conditions I have been riding. From my experience, I feel that after 500 miles of sand and silt, the K&N starts to get a bit filled up.

Since you are offering...

but you may have an agenda also...

The bottom line is everyone has a choice and opinion. Each person rides in different conditions and has a different riding style. I have used K&N filters exclusively since 1990. Living in the high desert, it is the filter that works best for me.

I have used it in my 97 Jeep, 73 International Scout, 74 International Travel-all (The Gus Bus), 93 Dakota,
71 Roadrunner, 71 Satellite Sebring, and 08 Grizzly.

All my off road machines and my muscle cars have had K&N filters and I will stick with it.
Better airflow and nothing gets by the filter into the airbox.

Another thing concerning airflow is that our air at the altitude I ride is less dense. I need to reduce the amount of fuel or get more air in the mixture on the Grizzly. I achieve this by better airflow through the K&N. My spark plug is mocha brown and I do not have any problems with the Grizzly running lean.

Sometimes the Grizzly ECU does not want to compensate enough for the higher elevations where I ride and it will run rich and lose power. By using the K&N with the improved airflow I am able to overcome that problem.

Those are my reasons for running K&N where I live and ride. It is worth the extra cost to me.

I've been waiting for you big guy, All I caught was some small fry's.
Here is where my friend Gus and I can be so totally different in our choice yet get the same results.

Gus, I don't another agenda. Not on this subject anyway.

I have actually been thinking of switching to the K&N. It does flow well and it is easy to clean. Even when considering the data I have already seen in a lab environment. My time is more valuable than anything these days so if I can spend more time riding than cleaning and servicing then I am in!

Besides I also know that I will not be keeping a machine any longer than 3 years and a little dirt will probably never show any signs in that amount of use. May for the next person buying it though. who knows.

Anyway, here is some interesting information on the K&N Testing that I never really read til now.
