EPS Function and (Kodiak vs Grizzly 450) > Please Explain
Hi there Grizs,
I went to the dealership last night to check out the kodiak 450 and Grizzly 550 when a sales manager said to me that the power steering doesnt work on either if the quad isnt moving. He showed me a 700 that he had and sure enough it didnt work untill it was moving. I wanted to ask you guys if this is normal? I know the polaris's have full power steering when not moving and tapers off as your speed increases and I would have thought that the yamahas system would work similarly....but better. To me it makes sence to have full power steering when not moving, much like a car. I mean its like saying that a cars power steering doesnt work when the car isnt moving, doesnt make sence to me. Could some one explain if this is true or not?
The next part of my question is about the differences between the Kodiak 450 and Grizzly 450. The dealer was telling me that they are completly different models. They have differnt parts and are not the same. I was under the understanding that the machines are the same minus the badging. She said that the Kodiak is maked in Japan and the Grizzly is made in the USA and that is the reason they are completly different, Different parts = different machine. ALso they told me the EPS orange light on the dash is a warnign light and should only be on if there is a problem, is there any truth to this as well? A review that I was watching had the light on all the time and they said it was working right.
Please help as I am very confused.
Thanks

My knowledge of the two
is that they have the same drivetrain, the Kodiak has a pull start in addition to the electric and preloadable shocks, as well as disc brakes all around(I may be wrong about that one)
the eps is an electric torque sensitive motor, so sitting still, it may not pick up enough resistance to activate it. the eps light is normally off.
p.s. just noticed you are in Canada. we no longer have the Kodiak, so my info may be flawed. I do think the drivetrain is the same on both machines, not sure about the other info I stated. the eps info is correct. sorry about the goof

I think that your thinking of th e2008 version of the kodiak. The new ones are different now. The kodiak does not have pull start and are not 4 wheel disk. There is a single wet break in the rear.
Any one else have info?

As far as I know, our 2011 Kodiak 450 is the same as the Grizzly 450 in the US?? No pull start and front disk and wet rear brake as stated above.

Ok, my bad
The Kodiak name has not been used in the US for about 5 years. I know my buddy has one that has a pull start. I thought he told me it had 4 wheel discs, but evidently not. All Yamahas now are Grizzlys, except the old mudder fave Big Bear 400. Those things are indestructible.

Hey Cubbee, does your kodiak or grizzlys power stearing work when not moving or only when you are moving?

The Kodiaks and the Grizzly 450's are the same machine. The Kodiaks are marketed in Canada while the Grizzly is marketed in the States. As far as the power steering, is has been a LONG time since I've been on my Kodiak. But if I recall corectly it did seem like the steering was assisted even when stopped. As per the light, I do not remember.

Correct, it works when sitting still. Mine does, you can also see this in the video on YouTube. Search grizzly 450eps. It shows the rider entering a creek bed at a complete stop & then having to change directions. They make it a point to mention that the power steering works in this position. The video is put on by Yamaha, hope this helps!!

I know exactly the video you are refering to. I watched it many times. The problem is that the dealer here in canada is saying that grizzly is not the same as the kodiak. They then showed me a grizzly 700 where the power steering wasnt working with the engine running and in drive. I am thinking that there was something either wrong with that quad or they are not settingnup these units correctly.
Its great that I now have proof that it should work when not moving from yours working. What year and model do you have?
Can any one else confirm or deniy their power steering working when not moving?
