The manual also says not to go into water deeper then your axles. Just Yamaha covering their butts.

I believe the Polaris is pretty much like the Grizzly's front diff, but in the back. The weight does not change much. However imo the biggest need for it is to cruise around making tight turns on you lawn or sensitive trails where you don't want the surface tore up.

If you had a full load on your rear rack, and a trailer weighing the back down and did not shift the riders weight forward on pavement the machine would perhaps refuse to turn or would not turn as short as it should. (Understeer or push the front end) However if the rider compensates for it it is a non issue.
Not that i would turn down a open/lockable rear diff, it would not be a deal breaker for me.
