The S&W .357 mag in a short barrel has got one hell
of a kick! it's a sexy gun, and i like it for a lady, but it
will kick like a mule and she most likely won't get a second
shot (if needed) off quickly.
Now if she runs .38 specials out of it - I say go with it.........
The XD sub is a good quality gun, but to me it boring as hell - jmo

How proficient is your wife with the use of a handgun?
I suggest you take her "window shopping" where she can fondle both design's...
Have her rack the slide several times on the autoloader (to make sure she can, and that the effort required is not too much for her!)... also, have her load a couple mag's full of ammo (or snap caps) if the shop will allow (getting those last couple rounds into an autoloader magazine can sometimes require alot of effort, especially for a lady's hand!)... if she has difficulty with either of these issues, a revolver may be better suited for her to use and carry IMO (no need to load mag's or rack slide)
Last, but certainly not least, which of the two "feel's" better in HER hand?
Another plus to the revolver as Jack mentioned is its ability to run heavy AND/OR light loads (.357MAG or .38SPL)... she can practice with .38SPL and reserve the magnum loads for personal defense scenario's

I've been workin' on "My Garage" If you care to take a LOOK
The Lady Smith!
She can practice with. 38s and carry short barrel. 38 +Ps which will definitely do the job.
Great gun and safe. No malfunctions to worry about. Just point and pull!

Springfield XD Sub-Compact 3" in 40S&W with crimson laser site added on.
or
Smith & Wesson Model 60LS in .357
Those are what I have narrowed it down to. Now to pick that ultimate Valentines gift for my honey.
Any advise? Thanks in advance.
Right there is your first mistake, not trying to be an A$$, You did ask for any advise!
Just saying you need to let her try several different guns and see which feels best for her and she likes to shoot. Us men think that we know better and what they should like. It rarely works that way. Assuming this is for Concealed Carry/Protection, She needs to have something she likes and fits well and that she will want to shoot and shoot often, even if she likes a .22 caliber, it is better to have that with her than a .38 or .40 .45 or 9mm at home.
I bet you can get a lot of friends and/or fellow riders in your area to meet up with you two and let you try their guns out, that will save you some rental fees. I would let someone try out any of my firearms once I felt confident that they were safe with them.

The one thing I don't like about the Smith is the open hammer.
The exposed hammer is necessary for the Single / Double action guns.
I could see where a woman (or man) would need to lock & load if they
perceived trouble coming their way.........

I'd personally pick the Springfield for my wife if choosing between the two. It is way more sexy than a revolver.
Is your wife comfortable with a caliber that large? Not that she could not or would not be, but if it were for my wife, I'd seek out something that would let her get off many shots and hope to hit something/someone.
Not that a 9mm is way smaller and easier, but I have been looking at the Sig P290 for my wife:
